What is Reiki?
Reiki is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, and is also a word used to describe a system of natural healing developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research and experience.
This healing technique is based on the principle that the whole world is made up of energy, energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. This life force, known as ‘Ki’ in Japan, ‘Chi’ in China and ‘Prana’ in India, nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions.
When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, and we experience a sense of wellbeing. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body. Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.
Reiki is given fully clothed in a quiet environment where client comfortably lies down or sits on a chair. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively, on or near the body using their intuition and training as a guide. There is no massage or manipulation. Reiki can be used on the person as a whole, or on specific parts of the body. It is also possible to receive Reiki at a distance.
Reiki is a tradition that is open to any belief system and it is a process that anyone can enjoy in the normal course of their life and can be used alongside other conventional or complementary treatments.
