What is Reflexology?

Reflexology which dates back to ancient Egypt, India and China, is the gentle pressure and massage of the feet, which possess thousands of nerve endings, corresponding to certain areas or organs of the body. It works on the reflex points to stimulate bringing about balance and deep relaxation and allowing the body to heal itself naturally.

Who can benefit from reflexology?

Reflexology is non-invasive, suitable for all ages and may bring relief for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. Many people find it beneficial, after completing a course of reflexology for a specific condition, to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain well-being. Reflexology is also popular for its ability to counteract stress by relaxing the mind and the body and many doctors and other health care professionals recognise it as a respected and effective therapy.

What to expect from a treatment?

On arrival you will be made comfortable in a reclining chair or on a couch. After a preliminary consultation to determine your present and past health and lifestyle, the Reflexologist will examine your feet and begin the treatment by applying gentle, but firm pressure to the reflex areas of your feet. The reflexes cover the whole foot and each one reflects a body organ, system or area. Some areas may be sensitive to touch (please let the therapist know at the time), but this is usually momentary and any discomfort will quickly pass.

A professionally trained reflexologist will notice subtle changes in specific points, which may be congestion or crystal deposits under the skin. This does not necessarily indicate a problem, but merely an energy blockage or imbalance, which they will gently work on to disperse and bring balance back to the corresponding areas of the body.

The treatment usually lasts for one hour (slightly longer on initial visit due to preliminary consultation). A course of treatment may be recommended according to your body’s needs. This varies from person to person but may be an initial set of four to six weekly/fortnightly/monthly treatments which may be enough to get the whole body back into balance. You then may wish to continue with less frequent maintenance treatments.

After Effects

The immediate effects felt at the end of the session may be:

Deep relaxation
A deep sense of well-being
Increased energy
Light-headedness
A feeling of elation
A really good night’s sleep
An emotional release
NB: Sometimes after the first or second session people feel tearful, lethargic, headachy, nauseous or notice an increase in bowel movements or need to empty their bladder frequently for a day or two afterwards. These are all signs of the body trying to rid itself of toxins and in most cases they are short-lived and show that your body is responding to treatment. Please tell your reflexologist of any such effects at the beginning of your next treatment so that they can formulate a treatment plan unique to you.
