What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle yet powerful hands on therapy that supports the body’s natural tendency to find health and optimum balance. It is based on a number of findings that were highlighted by osteopaths more than 100 years ago. These findings show that in health, all living tissues express a subtle rhythmic motion which has been called ‘Primary Respiration’. This motion is palpable to the hands of a trained therapist. The full and balanced expression of Primary Respiration is fundamental to good health. However, factors such as accidents, injuries, stresses, or emotional problems may affect the expression of Primary Respiration in the body.

Who can benefit

Craniosacral Therapy doesn’t just treat the head or spine, it works with the whole body, which means people come for treatments for a vast variety of reasons: physical aches and pains, acute and chronic disease, emotional or psychological stress or simply to help develop well-being, health and vitality.

Because it is so gentle and non-invasive it is suitable for everyone from new-borns to the elderly as well as those with fragile or acutely painful conditions.

Some patient conditions only need one or two sessions whereas others require a series of regular sessions over a longer period for lasting results.

Some people come for ‘maintenance’ sessions every few weeks or months because it helps them have more awareness of their own needs and strengths and their quality of life is enhanced.

What happens during a session

A Case History will be taken in the first session to determine the reasons for your visit. This helps gather important information and establish a good understanding with your practitioner.

In a typical session you will lie, fully clothed, on a well cushioned massage table, with blankets if necessary. Once comfortable I will make gentle contact with my hands. This contact could be on a variety of places such as your feet, hips, spine, shoulders, neck or head. Because the body functions as a whole I may work with areas other than where your symptoms occur.
